About Ancient Oceans

Ancient Oceans is an interactive web experience by Lewis A. Jones. It’s a scrolling journey that takes you through 4.5 billion years of Earth’s ocean history — from the first seas of a molten world to the reefs that face an uncertain future.

The concept is simple: just scroll. That single action carries you across deep time, past mass extinctions, vanished seaways, and oceans that once looked nothing like the ones we know today.

Built with contributions from expert scientists, Ancient Oceans weaves together storytelling, science, and discovery.

Contributors

Ancient Oceans grows with every contribution — and there are many ways to help, whatever your background or expertise.

  • Contribute or review events — share your knowledge of Earth’s past oceans, or help ensure existing content is accurate and up to date
  • Provide or fund images — photographs and visual reconstructions bring the deep past to life in ways words alone cannot
  • Spread the word — simply sharing Ancient Oceans with a colleague, student, or curious friend makes a real difference

All contributions, large and small, are deeply appreciated and help make Ancient Oceans a richer, more complete journey through deep time.
